Best time to visit Kaziranga National Park

The park runs from the first week of October to the end of May. Here is what each month is actually like, and when to come for the best sightings.

Kaziranga National Park usually opens in the first week of October and stays open until the end of May. Those dates move a little every year, because the Forest Department decides them based on how quickly the Brahmaputra floodwater drains off the grassland.

The short answer

November to March is the sweet spot. The grass has been cut or flattened, the mornings are cold and clear, and the animals come out into the open. April and May are hotter but still very good, and the park is far quieter.

Month by month

  • October. The park reopens. The grass is still tall in places and some tracks are soft, but there are very few tourists.
  • November to February. The best months. Cold mornings, excellent visibility, and the highest chance of seeing rhino, elephant and swamp deer together. Carry a jacket for the 7:30 AM jeep safari.
  • March and April. Warmer, still very good. Birdlife is at its best.
  • May. Hot, occasional pre-monsoon showers, and the last chance before closure.

Elephant safari

The elephant safari runs on a shorter calendar than the park itself — usually from the first week of November to the end of April. If an elephant ride is the reason you are coming, plan inside those months. This too is subject to change by the Forest Department.

Which range

Bagori (Western Range) is the classic rhino range. Kohora (Central Range) has the widest mix of grassland and wetland. Agoratoli (Eastern Range) is the quiet one, best for birds. Burapahar is hilly, wooded and the least visited of the four.
